The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 under the title “East London Christian Mission”. Initially intended by William and Catherine Booth as a means of bringing the poor to a saving faith and then helping them enter the Church, it was soon realized that many of the people they were helping were being rejected by the various congregations. As a result, the ministry grew into a church as well, giving rise to the Salvation Army today.

The Salvation Army is both an organization and a church. It is one of the leading providers of social assistance within Canada and worldwide. This desire to serve is done with the mission of witnessing to the lost, and bringing them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It also provides weekly church services and fellowship opportunities within many cities worldwide, and throughout Canada. There are some distinctions in the service which make the Salvation Army unique, but their beliefs are in line with evangelical Christianity, as can be seen in their core doctrinal statements.
